12/3/09: 100 LinkedIn connections!

Business has been steadily picking up, and a good indicator of that is my LinkedIn account. Starting from zero last year, I've grown my network to 100 1st-level connections (people that I know directly, vs. the people they know etc. - LinkedIn goes three degrees deep).

11/30/09: Too busy to post...
Well November was an interesting month. Small updates to a multitude of sites kept me busy, and we started laying the ground work for some big new projects. They'll be something to see when they're finished - but for now there's nothing much to show. So rather than let November pass with no news, I thought I'd share briefly what's been going on. Look for some impressive new sites in the coming months.
10/19/09: Book cover for I Am Not Supposed to Be Here sent to printer

What? A book cover? From a Web design firm? Yes, while I greatly prefer working on Web sites, my degree is in fact in the print side of graphic design, and I worked for a couple years in a print-based capacity. So, I can do the occasional print job if called upon.
Maryann Swartz came to me with just such a request. She had designed a book cover in Publisher, but the printer wanted an InDesign file. Maryann sent me all the necessary pictures along with a snapshot of how the final product was to look, and I used my Adobe expertise to bridge the gap by re-creating the art in InDesign. I created the cover to fit the dimensions given by the printer (including bleeds, trim marks, and other print lingo), and made a few design tweaks here and there while I was at it.
Once finished I gave the cover a 3-d look (picture above) for display online. The full layout including front, back, and spine appears below.
Another day, another satisfied client...

10/6/09: New site Dynamic Interactive Technologies launched

At Matt Weeden Design, I often combine forces with designers who deal mainly in print work. Visual Persuasion, a print design firm in Denver, recently designed a logo for a new company on the east coast called Dynamic Interactive Technologies. When the guys at DIT asked if Mandi does Web sites she said "No, but let me tell you who does..."
I took Mandi's logo design and created a simple starter Web site for DIT, based on the colors and feel of the logo. To easily accommodate future growth, I built the site using the PHP coding language; rather than updating the menu page by page as the site grows, I can change one file and affect the menus on all pages at once.
10/5/09: Redesign of Discovery Outsourcing launched

In collaboration with Six Degrees Studio, I participated in the redesign of the site for Discovery Outsourcing: a local HR outsourcing firm. Provided with the overall look by designer Christa Rost, I implemented the design into the Joomla content management framework. Once that was accomplished I created the pages and menus, and put in some advanced plug-ins for increased functionality on the site. The full-time staff at Six Degrees Studio then added all the textual content.
This is the biggest project I've completed to date for Six Degrees Studio, and I look forward to many future collaborations.
